Obesity and overweight has become an urgent global health concern, affecting millions of people, young or old. The prevalence of overweight and obesity has risen so dramatically in the previous 50 years. As stated by the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults were overweight, with more than 650 million of these adults being classified as obese. Childhood obesity is on the rise-with over 340 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 being termed obesity and obese. This worldwide pandemic starts from a combination of genetic-environmental-behavioral factors.
Causes and Risk Factors
Dietary Patterns: The increasing consumption of high-energy-dense, low-nutrient foods and sugary beverages is a major contributor. Heavily processed and fast foods, rich in unhealthy fats and sugars, are widely available, and often cheaper than healthier alternatives.
Physical Inactivity: Sedentary lifestyle due to the advent of screen-based entertainment and desk jobs reduces the calorie expenditure, hence the weight.
Genetics and Metabolism: Genetic predispositions may affect how the body stores fat and synthesizes energy. There may also be disturbances in hormone, like insulin or leptin.

Obesity lead to such a variety of health conditions as follows:
Cardiovascular Diseases:

Medical Treatment: In those circumstances whereby lifestyle fails to prove efficient, surgical intervention will require either medical control of obesity or surgery in such conditions.
Public and Community-Based Strategies: Community strategies might be concerned with expanded monitoring on junk food advertisements along with giving public service announcements regarding foods high in sugars, fats, or general food values towards informing consumers.
Education and Awareness
Education on the stigma of obesity and healthy lifestyles is critical to curbing the epidemic. It’s imperative that the school/workplace/community join together to create environments conducive to health and wellness.
